 北京某研究院的地下室里，住着一群尚无分房资格的大龄青年。朱一丹好不容易争取到一间小屋——与推销员罗大侠合住一个单元，成为青年中第一个即将“爬上地面”的幸运儿。这天，他的女朋友尹澜澜和初有成、孙晓琪等伙伴设宴为他送行。席间，青年们从房管处的老曹口中获悉，明天将要分配一批住房，但前提是必须持有结婚证。正当大家为朱一丹和尹澜澜庆幸时，他们却向众人宣布决定分手。为了把朱一丹挤出去，罗大侠和妻子小枫在门厅里设置了许多“路障”；还用面糊堵住了朱一丹小屋的锁眼，害得乔迁的朱一丹在门厅睡了一夜。青年们为了分到房子纷纷行动起来。尹澜澜也结交了新的男朋友——马自达。谁知，马自达一见到孙晓琪立刻转了向，尹澜澜痛苦万分。一天，小混混丁三趁大侠不在家，企图调戏小枫，被朱一丹赶走，小枫对朱十分感激。一个偶然的机会，朱一丹与初有成的表妹晶晶相遇，二人一见钟情。逛商店时，晶晶看中了一套时装，朱一丹在付钱时才尴尬地发现自己看错了价码，囊中款项根本不够。一天，小枫在洗澡时煤气中毒，朱一丹把她抱出浴室做人工呼吸，恰被出差归来的大侠撞见。大侠不问青红皂白，对朱一丹大打出手，小枫一气之下回了娘家。在朱一丹的劝导下，夫妻二人和好如初。晶晶进了外企，并被派到南方任职。朱一丹买下那套时装，赶到机场为她送行，却意外地得到晶晶要与他分手的消息。但朱一丹并没有被痛苦压垮，很快振作了起来。为了能够分到住房，照顾瘫痪的老父亲，尹澜澜情急之下，竟决定嫁给年愈50的单身汉老曹。为了帮助尹澜澜，朱一丹决定跟她“假结婚”。洞房花烛之时，这一对新人旧情萌发假戏成真。
